Welcome

Fellow writers and readers,

Hello! I want to welcome you to my new blog, “The Writer in the World.” I decided to create this blog as part of an independent study for my graduate coursework in Creative Writing at Chatham University. Here, I plan to explore the role of the writer, the meaning of literary citizenship, and my own responsibilities within the writing community.

This summer I’ll be reading new works and immersing myself in the literary networks near (central Pennsylvania) and far. I am primarily a poet, so I will approach this blog through a poetry lens. However, there will be a collection of “Featured Reads” on the blog which will cover a variety of genres. After my own brief review of each text, I will provide poetry prompts for readers. I may even share some of my own poems along the way. Poetry lovers, please write along with me!

Please check back next week for my thoughts on the first book of the summer. I am excited to dive into the upcoming weeks and hope you can join me on my journey!

To begin thinking about the obligation to community we have as writers, and more broadly as humans, I leave you with a quote from one of my favorite writers, Ross Gay. In his most recent collection of essays, Inciting Joy, he asks: “What if joy is not only entangled with pain, suffering, and sorrow, but is also what emerges from how we care for each other through these things?”
